Now, in a continuation of our previous post briefly outlining the history of the trampoline, Leaps & Rebounds is going to continue touching on this history. From ancient cultures to your backyard, let’s jump back into the fun. Development Of The Early Trampoline As we mentioned in our previous post, the exact origins of the trampoline as we know it today are unclear. Though there is no documented evidence to support this, the belief goes that the early trampoline was first developed by French artist Du Trampolin, which would explain the name. It is said that Du Trampolin was watching a circus and realized the possibility of using the trapeze safety net as a form of propulsion and landing device, like that of a jumping net. Well, after experimenting and tinkering with different materials and methods of suspension, Trampolin was able to develop a medium-sized net suited for use by one acrobat. This greatly decreased the possibility of mid-air collisions for trapeze artists, and ultimately proved to be quite useful. The Modern Trampoline (For Gymnasts) Trampolin’s design and other early devices were used for hundreds of years, but “modern” trampolines weren’t invented until the 20th century. George Nissen and Larry Griswold are credited with developing the first trampoline in 1935. Both with gymnastics backgrounds, they saw early trampoline designs as a great way training tool and safety measure for gymnasts. The first modern trampoline was composed of an angle iron, a canvas bed, and rubber springs made in the basement of the local YMCA. Fun For Everyone Sure enough, though the original modern trampoline was initially designed for gymnastics training, Nissen and Griswold soon discovered that trampolines were a crowd pleaser in their own right! With a soft impact and the ability to propel the jumper up into the air, it became clear that trampolines were fun. After moving their new invention back to the YMCA camp where it was originally developed, curious children began to fight over bouncing on it, enthralled by “catching air.” Inspired to draw the trampoline to a wider audience, the Griswold-Nissen Trampoline and Tumbling company was born! Viola. From the 20th century and into the 21st century, trampolines continued to innovate and become more popular, and well, with respect to leaving out many details, the rest is, as they say, history. Jump Into Better Shape With Leaps & Rebounds! The treadmill can be boring and unforgiving, and it’s dangerous to deal with traffic on a bicycle.
